Francis Bertram

Founder, Loyola College

Established in 1925 by the esteemed French Jesuit priest, Francis Bertram, alongside other distinguished European Jesuits, Loyola College embarked on a noble mission of providing transformative education. From its humble beginnings with just 75 students enrolled in three undergraduate courses, Loyola has evolved into a renowned institution of academic excellence and innovation.

 Affiliated initially with the University of Madras, Loyola gained autonomy in 1978, empowering it to design its own curriculum and adopt progressive teaching methodologies. Over the decades, Loyola’s commitment to excellence has been recognized by prestigious bodies such as the UGC and NAAC, with accolades including the status of “College with potential for Excellence” and “College of Excellence.” Today, Loyola stands as a beacon of educational prowess, offering a diverse array of 19 postgraduate and undergraduate courses, along with specialized institutes, serving a student body of 12,107 individuals. With a dedicated faculty, including many holding doctoral degrees, Loyola College continues to uphold its legacy of academic rigor and service to society.
